WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH | The first Southeast SUP Championship is at 9 a.m. Sept. 26 at Dockside Restaurant, 1308 Airlie Road, will be a good opportunity. Stand up paddleboarding involves a long board, much like an old windsurfing board and a long paddle. The rider paddles out over the break, then stands up and paddles the boards. It’s surprisingly steady.
The Championship race is divided into categories: 14 foot and over unlimited class, 12 foot 6 inches and under unlimited men’s class, 12 foot 6 six inches and under unlimited women’s class, and 12 foot 6 inches and under lifeguard class. The course is 3.5 miles long and goes around Harbor Island.
There is a $35 non-refundable entry fee to enter the race, which will occur rain or shine. The fee includes dinner 7 p.m. Friday at Dockside, a commemorative numbered event jersey and an after race party with live music.
